My First Rolfing Session

I spend a lot of time working on myself to combat the muscle tension created through my day job. I’ve gotten pretty good at it over the years, but it pretty much just keeps my head above water. I just don’t have enough time to focus and really fix the problems. I finally went to see someone who did. This morning I had my first Rolfing session ever.I’ve been wanting to try Rolfing for about 10 years now, but I’d just never done it. I’ve had a lot of massages, which focuses on the muscle tissue, though. Rolfing is the same, but different. Sorry, couldn’t resist. Rolfing focuses on the fascia rather than the muscles. For more about fascia see my blog post, The Fascia is King.

To say that my session was amazing would be an understatement. In a single session, she released such a large amount of the tension in my shoulder girdle that I didn’t stop smiling about it all day. I felt like my back was 6 inches wider. I didn’t even realize how bad the tension had become until it was gone.

Often, when I get a massage, it’s pretty uncomfortable to painful. It makes the muscles relax though and I feel a lot better when I’m done so it’s worth it. Rolfing didn’t really hurt at all. And the muscles released more than I usually experience with a massage. I could feel things loosening while she was working on me. I actually think that my neck loosened up so much that the blood flow to my brain improved enough that I got high on oxygen…

I had an hour to kill before I went to work after my session, so I just wandered around a little nature trail nearby with a big stupid grin on my face checking out trees and bushes.

The best part. I haven’t tightened back up. After an extremely busy day at work and a lot of running around, my neck and back are still loose. In fact, I feel like it has continued to loosen up throughout the day. I am one happy puppy. You can bet this won’t be my last session.
